FDA Confirms Indonesian Shrimp, Spice Supply Chains Remain Clear a Year After Cesium-137 Crisis

Indonesian shrimp and spice imports face no new restrictions after an FDA review found the country's cesium-137 (Cs-137) certification program is working as intended, signaling to US buyers that the supply chain disruption from last year's contamination crisis is unlikely to recur in the near term.

The FDA released a report on October 5 summarizing findings from a May 2026 in-country assessment of Indonesia's Cs-137 import certification program, which covers certain...

ANALYSIS: Live Lobster Prices Held in Check as Buyers Stay Disciplined and Frozen Stocks Stay Lean

The live lobster market remains subdued, with buyers largely covering immediate requirements rather than extending inventory positions. Buyers have shown little urgency to chase higher offers, even as availability tightens in select sizes. The market is also moving through a seasonally quieter demand period ahead of the year-end holiday push, while broader consumer caution and sensitivity to food costs may be weighing on premium seafood demand...

El Niño Adds to Cost Pressure on India's Shrimp Farmers as 2027 Stocking Looms

Heat and low oxygen in ponds are a growing risk for Andhra Pradesh farmers, but rising costs are driving farmgate prices so far.

India's shrimp farmers face a tougher season as feed, packaging, freight, and energy costs rise. Expana reported in early October that farmgate prices are climbing again after months of seasonal decline, squeezing processor margins while export prices remain under pressure.

Feed is a growing concern. Peru, the world's largest fish meal and fish oil producer, has seen elevated sea temperatures reduce anchovy biomass...

Chile: Algal Bloom Contingency Closed as ISA Harvests Continue in Aysén

Chile's fisheries service, Sernapesca, declared the end of a mass-mortality contingency at Multiexport Patagonia's Magallanes farms on Oct. 14.

A harmful algal bloom killed 917.79 tonnes of fish across salmon concession groups 43A and 43B. All of the dead fish were harvested and sent to the La Portada reduction plant in Los Lagos. Sernapesca authorized early harvests to limit further losses. Magallanes regional director Ximena Gallardo said that although mortality exceeded 900 tonnes, it was low compared with other algal bloom events the agency...

US Black Cod Prices Rise to 2,500 Yen Per Kilo, Sales Steady Driven by Perceived Value

As of early October, the domestic wholesale price for U.S.-sourced black cod in the 4–5 lb size range is between 2,400 and 2,500 yen/kg ($15.18-15.81/kg)—an increase from the approximately 1,800 yen/kg ($11.38/kg) seen as recently as this spring. This rise reflects a global trend of higher fish prices, and for now, movement within the Japanese market remains steady.

However, some traders have expressed concern, noting, "There are...

Appeals Court Dismisses Maine Lobster Suit Over Seafood Watch 'Red' Rating

The US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit has dismissed a defamation lawsuit Maine lobster groups filed against the Monterey Bay Aquarium Foundation over its Seafood Watch recommendation to avoid American lobster. In a judgment entered October 9, the court reversed the district court's denial of the aquarium's motion to dismiss and remanded with instructions to dismiss the complaint.

The ruling rests on the "group defamation rule." Under that rule, a defamatory statement about a large group is not actionable unless the statement or its context...

The Retail Rundown: Grocery Inflation Eases, Protein Trends Diverge

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI), released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), offered a modest reprieve for grocery shoppers in September. While the overall food index held steady, retail feature data reveal a more uneven picture across protein categories.

Food-at-home prices eased 0.1% in September, while the index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs declined 0.5%, led by a 1.0% drop in beef prices. Still, the broader trend remains upward, as grocery prices were 1.8% higher than a year ago.

Foodservice inflation continues to run hotter...

BioMar Launches BioRetain, Targeting Nutrient Retention in Aquafeed

Feed is the largest cost in aquaculture, and BioMar says a growing share of the nutrients fish and shrimp consume never reaches growth. Its new BioRetain concept is designed to change that. The company says the formulation improves how nutrients are used and retained, directing more of them toward protein growth rather than energy use or fat storage.

BioMar says the approach can improve biological performance without raising protein or energy levels in the feed. It also gives formulators more room to choose raw materials, which the company says...
