The firm said King Tilapia is part of a broader push to align the industry around a formal tilapia standard. The initiative includes size and grading specifications...

Philippines Fisheries Output Down 7.5% in Q3

The country’s fisheries production fell by nearly a 10th in the third quarter of 2025 as weaker aquaculture harvests and lower municipal catches outweighed gains from commercial fishing.

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) yesterday said total fisheries output from July to September reached 894,320 metric tons, down by 7.5 percent from 966,730 MT a year earlier.

“Decreases in production were noted in aquaculture, marine municipal fisheries and inland municipal fisheries. Meanwhile, commercial fisheries posted production increments during the quarter,” the PSA said...

The global seafood industry is amidst a period of profound disruption, according to the latest Rabobank report.

Seafood producers and exporters are being impacted by tariffs and geopolitical tensions, notably in Asia. Meanwhile, consumers in the Western part of the globe are facing increased prices and reduced availability of seafood staples.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), the global tilapia market...

Fish Industry Halts Exports, Delays Investments on Tariff Fears

Two weeks after the United States announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian products, uncertainty and losses are mounting in the fish industry, one of the hardest-hit sectors by the measure set to take effect on August 1. Importers have suspended purchases, shipments are en route to the U.S. without clarity on whether they will be subject to the new duty, and companies are already delaying investment plans.

Netuno, an importer based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and owned by Brazilians, has suspended all purchases of Brazilian fish until...

Brazil’s seafood industry is already feeling the fallout from President Donald Trump’s newly imposed 50% tariffs, warned Jairo Gund, executive director of the Brazilian fishing industry association (ABIPESCA), in a recent interview on local television.

The newly imposed 50% tariff created a massive headwind for Brazilian seafood exports to the US, as Expana reported earlier this month.

Abipesca highlighted that the tariffs would lead to significant losses for the aquaculture sector...

The Winding Glass: Seafood Trade Disruptions Reappear While Economic Headwinds Drive Prices Down

The economic collapse that many of us feared from the chaotic tariff policies of the Trump administration has not materialized—at least not yet. The seafood industry has shown a remarkable degree of resilience in the face of disruptive trade policy. But this should not be mistaken for invulnerability. The more pressing issue now is not tariffs but weakening consumer demand.

There are three reasons the anticipated tariff-induced disaster hasn’t occurred. First, there’s a deep political bias baked into how people perceive economic risks...

Brazil’s tilapia sector is navigating another challenge after the National Biodiversity Commission (Conabio) labeled the fish species invasive. Meanwhile, US tariffs on Brazilian seafood, including tilapia, continue to squeeze export margins, compounding uncertainties for producers.

The classification signals stricter controls and potential regulatory hurdles, threatening to disrupt one of Brazil’s most vital...
