Maine’s lobster fishery softened in 2025, with preliminary state data showing landings down by roughly 8 million pounds and total value falling by more than $75 million year‑over‑year.

According to import and export statistics from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of South Korea, imports of Japanese seafood reached $247 million in 2025, up 27% from the previous year. This increase was primarily driven by significant growth in live fish such as yellowtail and sea bream, which helped imports return to levels seen before the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident in 2011.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO)’s stock assessment for sea scallops in Scallop Fishing Area 27A (Georges Bank) paints a cautious picture for one of the region’s higher‑value shellfish resources.

According to trade statistics released by the Ministry of Finance on September 26, August's fishery products exports (fish, shellfish, seafood preparations, and fish meal) increased 57% in volume to 50,267 tons compared to the same month last year. They increased 25% in value to 26.754 billion yen ($182.16 million). Scallop exports decreased by 18% to 5,982 tons, but increased by 28% to 8.673 billion yen ($59.04 million). This season's scallop harvest off Hokkaido's Okhotsk coast has passed the halfway point. Clearwater Vessel Accused of Fishing in Closed Zone

Fisheries officers arrested a person earlier this week in southwest Nova Scotia and seized more than $1 million worth of scallop meat after they say a surveillance operation found a Clearwater vessel fishing in a closed area.

According to a release from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the arrest happened Tuesday and followed unauthorized activity in Scallop Fishing Area 29 D by the vessel Atlantic Protector.

The area, which is off the coast of Shelburne County near Clark's Harbour, is known for its premium quality scallops.
